Apology

So, I have not kept up my end of the bargain with this blog...my time has been taken up with journalism school and writing (occasionally) for 49ersparadise.com, a fantastic website.

Honestly, 49ersparadise can do a better job covering the team than I could ever do with this blog...so, I'm retiring it, at least for the foreseeable future...of course, I reserve the right to change my mind, in great athlete fashion.

So check out 49ersparadise.com. It's worth it.

www.49ersparadise.com

Pretty soon, I'm going to start writing weekly articles for www.49ersparadise.com. I also plan on podcasting every other week on the lastest Niner moves.

Readers: this is the premiere website for 49ers fans. The site should be the first place you go for any Niners information. I've given up surfing the web or reading the San Francisco Chronicle to catch up on my news. Instead, I just go to www.49ersparadise.com. Makers of the site scour all major football websites and quickly post new stories on the web. The site also has original content (some of which I will contribute), but I'll admit: the true selling point of the site is its unbelievably quick and reliable 49er information. Plus, the site has made connections to writers on the inside, so some information is first-hand.

I hope you guys don't think this is an advertisement (after all, I'm not getting paid). It's simply a fact: no website generates Niner news faster. You should all check it out...and I'm going to continue posting here (more frequently), so this blog will not go away...

Stallworth to Pats....

All this means is that it is imperative we draft a top-quality receiver...

Saturday, March 10, 2007

Who's next?

Now that the Niners have slowed their frantic spending spree, one can't help but wonder who is next...Donte Stallworth is still on the market and could conceivably be a 49er...

That would make the receiving corp: Arnaz Battle, Ashley Lelie, Donte Stallworth, Bryan Gilmore, Brandon Williams

Tight ends: Delanie Walker, Vernon Davis

This seems like a tighter unit. You know the Niners are going to add a WR or two in the draft, but adding Stallworth doesn't put pressure on a draft pick to immediately perform. However, if the Niners do draft, say, a Dwayne Jarrett as a trade-up in the early second round, there would be a definite crowd at WR...but injuries happen, and depth isn't necessarily a bad thing. However, knowing that Lelie has anger-management issues when he's not playing, my guess is that the Niners pass on Stallworth and simply fill up the receiving corps in the draft.

LaVar Arrington is still on the market...might the Niners take a flier on this guy?

Now here's a thought...

What about Ricky Williams as a backup to Gore? He'd be a great second option, wouldn't he?

He lives in California and would probably come relatively cheap...

One major difference...

A lot of writers, commentators and fans have drawn comparisons to the Eddie D/Carmen Policy free-spending ways based on the past few days.

However, this is one major difference this time around...the Niners are limiting themselves to players 27 and younger.

The old Niners spent to add veterans--especially on defense. Kevin Greene, Rod Woodson, Charles Haley (the second time around), Richard Dent, Charles Mann, Rickey Jackson and many others were already-proven vets on the tail ends of their careers when the signed with SF in the '90s. They were signed to mix in with a team near the brink of a Super Bowl every year.

This year's team is building. These signing are meant to be key pieces to a growing team in 2007, 2008, 2009 and beyond.

It's still money, but money differently spent...and for a rebuilding team, this is definitely the way to go...Paraag Marathe got some really bad press in his first year, but he should be credited for designing contracts that will prevent the Niners from suffering through cap hell in future years while still bringing in talent. Hiring Stanford grads to control contracts is the wave of the future for all sports...

Joe Horn or Eric Moulds?

One of these guys, a good draft pick, Lelie, Gilmore, B. Williams and Battle would be work fine as a group, no?

Fill in the blanks

What do the Niners still need? Just fill in the blanks...

QB Smith
RB Gore (Hicks is a serviceable backup)
FB Norris
WR ____, Lelie, Battle (a No. 1 receiver is still needed...Look to the draft. Brandon Williams and Bryan Gilmore are the backups.)
TE Davis
OL Jennings, Allen, Heitmann, Smiley, Synder (Harris, Wragge, Bass all good backups)

DEs Young, Douglas (Fields is supposed to be a good backup, but we need a _____ who can put pressure on the QB from the end position, even in the 3-4)
DT Franklin (____ back-up, or maybe the starter. Look to the draft)
LBs Moore, Banta-Cain, Smith, Lawson (Ulbrich, Haralson and ___ back-up...another tackler, perhaps, through free agency?)
SS M. Lewis (K. Lewis is a great backup)
FS M. Roman (K. Lewis will backup here too)
CB Clements, Harris (Spencer is a good backup)

So, the Niners have a whole bunch of picks...but only four glaring areas of need.

The most glaring is clearly wide receiver. Without a top target, the team is going nowhere next year. Everyone will clamp down on Gore if Smith can't throw the ball. The team MUST find a potential No. 1 receiver in the draft. If Calvin Johnson can't be had, look for the team to trade up to the late first/early second to draft Jarrett. At least, I hope...)

As it stands now, I see the Niners front 3 putting minimal pressure on the QB, which means that Moore, Haralson and Banta-Cain (and maybe Green) will be in charge of getting the QB. It's risky to have all of your rushers line up behind the line. The Niners need a rushing end who can play the 3-4. Look to the third and fourth round here--or, potentially, Adam Carriker in the first round.

I see the Niners toying with the idea of bringing in another linebacker through free agency. There are a lot out there...maybe Donnie Edwards? He was coached by Manusky at San Diego...with Banta-Cain signed, we could use an all-purpose linebacker, not simply a pass-rusher...Edwards could be a Gary Plummer-like signing...(and not simply the San Diego to San Francisco connection...)

Finally, I'm not totally sold on Franklin. We need another option in the middle. Nose tackles wear down quickly, even mid-game. If we don't trade up for Calvin Johnson, I see us going DT in the first round, either by trading up for Branch or taking Okoye.

Tully Banta-Cain

This guy is paying a visit to Niners headquarters...he'd be a good signing. I watched a lot of him on the Pats this past season, and he is an excellent pash rusher...he reminds me a lot of Tim Harris. We haven't had a great pass rushing linebacker in a while (although Roderick Green showed potential last year).

If Banta-Cain can improve a little more, he might be good for 7-to-9 sacks.

Arrington or Porter?

Porter's character would be perfect for this team. He would bring a nastiness that hasn't existed for a long time (especially now that Newburry is gone). BY is a nice guy...Porter is a beast.

Arrington has a lot of potential too...I know both might be potential "attitude" problems...would signing one or the other be more trouble than its worth?

Is something funny going on?

Just a thought...not even a hunch, but...

The Ravens had the opportunity to tag Adalius Thomas. For a bizarre reason, they did not.

Then, the Niners seemingly had an open-door invitation to sign Thomas. Nolan used to be his coordinator and SF had more money than anyone.

Oddly, a day before free agency begins, there's a leak in Niners camp that says, "we may not be as interested in Thomas as you think..."

Sure enough, from the gun, the Niners jump in and sign Clements, leaving Thomas alone. They tentatively book an interview, but on Day 2, understanding that New England would have first dibs.

Perhaps Thomas simply wanted to play with New England--I mean, who wouldn't. They are the best thing going right now...a Super Bowl contender, potential dynasty, playing with a lot of money. Maybe Thomas' agent said to the Niners, "I don't care how much money you offer me, my client wants New England."

But maybe Nolan and the Ravens know something we don't. Is it possible Nolan and Billick thought Thomas wasn't worth big money? And the talk of the Niners' interest was just smoke and mirrors to drive the price up for another team?

Whoa! I like Day 2 A LOT...

Ashley Lelie! I really didn't think we'd go for this guy, so I never mentioned him...I like this signing a lot. Lelie is only two years removed from a 1,000 yard season. He's young and has more potential than Stallworth, Bennett (who also signed today...glad not with us...), or Kevin Curtis. He is 6'3, 200 lbs...he's in the mold of Antonio Bryant (Bryant's actually a bit smaller), without quite as much baggage (although he, too, has been labeled as a clubhouse cancer at times) and a little more speed. Atlanta didn't use him right...it's tough when Vick's your QB to really utilize wide receivers...

Lelie is the type of stronger receiver the team needed. Can be a No. 1? Maybe not...but he can be a No. 2. And right now, we don't even have that.

Also, the Niners seem to think that Aubrayo Franklin is big enough to start in the middle at 320 lbs. In today's NFL 320 lbs isn't huge. Why didn't we just draft Vince Wolfork a few years ago instead of trading down for Rashaun Woods!? It makes me so mad! It was such an obvious pick at the time...we have needed a big DT for, like, 10 years!

So we beat Denver...

A lot of pundits have looked to the Niners' end-of-year victory against the Broncos as a huge win, as it solidified the Niners as a team on the rise.

However, if we had lost that game, we'd be in a much better position to draft Branch or pass-rushers Jamaal Anderson/Gaines Adams in the first-round.

Now, we're going to have to trade up to get any of the three...and lose some really good picks.

The game had no playoff implications for us (we were out already) and could jeopardize the near future of the team...

You can argue it had positive externalities (it helped morale! It convinced Clements we were a team on the rise!), but this reasoning seems lame and probably untrue.

Just a thought...

Hmmm...

Well, the defense is better, but the Niners still have a lot of holes to fill...

My revised prediction for the 2007 starting defense:

DE B. Young
NT A. Okoye/trade up for Branch (I'm assuming Aubrayo Franklin is not good enough to start)
DE M. Douglas

LB J. Porter
LB B. Moore
LB M. Lawson
LB D. Smith

CB Clements
CB Harris
SS M. Lewis
FS M. Roman (Nolan said he'd start...over K. Lewis? I'm surprised...)

This puts big-money CB Shawntae Spencer as a nickel back...

The rich get richer...

You can't always get what you want...from Boston.com...

Thomas update

The Patriots are scheduled to host linebacker Adalius Thomas at Gillette Stadium on Saturday, and assuming he passes a physical and there are no last-minute hitches, the sides should finalize a blockbuster deal that will make Thomas a Patriot, according to a source familiar with the negotiations.

Clements and Michael Lewis signed...

A new starter on defense and a primary backup...Clements definitely overpaid at 8 years, 80(!) million...

I guess Walt Harris will go from Pro Bowler to nickel back...

Michael Lewis was burned in coverage over and over again for the Eagles last year...I hope this was a "one-year" slip-up, because he used to be nasty...

http://www.49ersparadise.com/cgi-bin/news/news.cgi?action=display&num=11790

So, we overpaid for a corner and signed a one-dimensional safety on day one...

Not really what I was expecting today...

Clements?

ESPN reports the Niners are close to signing Clements...

Do we really need this guy, with Harris and Spencer? Is his signing going to prevent us from signing Adalius?

Does this make sense? I suppose Harris is getting old, but still...

Would you do it?

Here's a thought:

Would you give up the No. 11 pick AND next year's first round pick to move up nine spots and draft Calvin Johnson? The Niners are so young (and should be good enough in 2007) that having a first-rounder next year may not yield huge benefits. Is it worth it to move up to a position this year to grab a potential superstar receiver by mortgaging a little bit of the future?

QB Smith
RB Gore
FB Norris
WR Calvin Johnson, Donte Stallworth, (Arnaz Battle)
TE Davis
OLs Jennings, Allen, Heitman, Smiley, Snyder (Do we really need Leonard Davis? I think our money would be better spent elsewhere...)

DEs Young, Haralson/Kerney
DT Douglas (he's big enough...)/Fields
LBs Adalius Thomas, Manny Lawson, Derek Smith, Brandon Moore
SS Roman/Free agent/Second-round pick
FS Keith Lewis
CB Spencer, Harris

Porter and Horn?

We're a little more than two hours away from the official start of free agency, and players are being dumped to help cap-strapped teams get their finances in order.

The Niners have a ton of money to spend but cut Antonio Bryant today. I'd imagine most fans aren't too upset with that, assuming we can find someone to replace him...

Joe Horn might be an option. He was cut today and might be the best free agent out there. But, he's 35 and has been injury prone recently...that said, our newly appointed QB coach was the Saints' QB coach in 2000 and 2001, during Horn's prime. He may have some say there...

Joey Porter was cut today too. This guy has been around for a while but is still only 29. He's a stud, and the Niners should give him a really good look. He'd be a lot cheaper than Thomas, if the Niners decide tying all that money in one player just isn't worth it...

Cutting Bryant means the Niners are really depleted at WR. Could this mean the Niners will go WR with their first pick (Ginn?) and address defense in free agency? Or, will they make a trade for a veteran WR who is currently not happy with his situation? Or, is the team that high on local guy Drew Bennett? I doubt Bennett could be a No.1, though...but maybe the Niners are content to sign Stallworth and pair him with Battle and Bennett?

From Cnnsi.com...

I sure hope this is just smoke and mirrors:

• Where will the biggest of the free-agent names end up? Sources I talked to Thursday said not to discount linebacker Adalius Thomas winding up with New England -- despite an expected price tag that could approach $9 million per season. While many anticipate Thomas being reunited with former Ravens defensive coordinator Mike Nolan in San Francisco, some within the league said the 49ers won't necessarily make a strong push for him.

mental block?

I just realized that I didn't include Manny Lawson in our starting defense for next year...maybe that's because he was pretty quiet last year.

Lawson is clearly in the Niners' plans as a potential starter at the linebacker position. This might prompt the Niners to sign an offensive lineman (Leonard Davis?) instead of signing Cato June...

Correction to previous post

It looks like Dwayne Jarrett is falling faster than Britney Spears, so scratch his name from Niners' consideration at No. 11.

However, Ted Ginn Jr. could be an option. I just don't see the Niners going his way. The Niners have a history of not taking punt/kick returners with first round picks. He's also a smaller receiver, who are not typically dominant in the NFL--and not typically drafted by San Francisco. Of course, the whole offense is different now, so using history as a guide is faulty.

While I think the Niners will go defense, here are a few reasons why Ginn could be an option, assuming he's around at No. 11.

No. 1: Antonio Bryant and Vernon Davis are bigger guys. The Niners could use a guy who really stretches the field. Signing Donte Stallworth would get the job done and wouldn' t require passing on a defensive stud at No. 11. However, Ginn has more upside than Stallworth.

No. 2: Steve Smith and Torry Holt have had a lot of success in recent years against NFC opponents. If Ginn is anywhere near these guys, he will be able to contribute in any offensive system. And since we're not even positive the Niners will stick with Turner's run-first offense, Ginn could feature in a more pass-friendly offense.

No. 3: Getting Smith offensive tools--especially without Turner on board--is going to be crucial to his development. If the Niners think Ginn is a playmaker, he definitely adds an element to the offense that is currently lacking (downfield speed). Of course, Brandon Williams would become a total waste pick last year (assuming Ginn takes over at both return spots). But, that's a minor issue...

Breaking down the Niners' choices...

We're still about two months away from the NFL Draft, so it's still premature to guess who the Niners will take. But, it's not too premature to speculate about the top candidates...

At this point, I'd say the Niners are looking hard at four guys with the No. 11 pick...

Amobi Okoye, DT, Louisville
Jarvis Moss, DE, Florida
Dwayne Jarrett, WR, USC
Reggie Nelson, S, Florida

I think these are four quality selections. I'm not sure the Niners could go wrong with any of them...but Okoye is a bit of a risk given he's only 19 and could leave as a free agent before he hits his prime...

Jarrett's a very interesting choice. If Calvin Johnson wasn't in the draft, he'd probably be the first WR taken...and I have a feeling he'd go higher than he's going to go...

This guy might be the real deal...exactly what SF needs to have a juggernaut offense. But, he's a risk...we haven't had good luck with first round WR picks. Is it worth it to pass up a sure-fire defensive stud to pick Jarrett? That's where SF's personnel department comes into play...

Nelson and Moss both played for Florida's national championship team. Moss is 6'6. 255...he definitely has NFL size. And he has a great burst. But he only had two sacks all last year...and they both came in the Ohio St. blowout. Where was he the rest of the season? Moss scares me. I think I'd pass on him...especially in the 3-4. But, he has huge upside, so I doubt it would be a Reggie McGrew mistake...

Nelson had 6 INTs and a TD for Florida last year...and he's coming out early (he's only a junior). I think he should be the pick, but I can't remember the last time the Niners drafted a safety in one of the top three rounds, let alone the first round.

Lastly, I don't know how substantiated this is, but according to his website, Adalius Thomas and the Niners already have a tentative deal lined up....

Bye bye blackbird

The Niners waved Sammy Davis today...so we know thing's certain: the Niners' secondary will be better in 2007 than it was in 2006.

Harsh, but it's true...

Walt Harris had a screw put into his hand after breaking it in the Pro Bowl. He has plenty of time to recover...but the Niners might want to draft a replacement for Harris, who likely doesn't have too many good years left in him...and I guess his heir apparent isn't going to be the greatest living entertainer in the world...

See ya, Sammy. I'd rather have Rashaun Woods. OK, maybe not...

2007-08 Niners starting lineup...a hopeful prediction?

QB Alex Smith
RB Frank Gore
FB Moran Norris
WRs Antonio Bryant, Donte Stallworth (*For the first two games while Bryant is suspended, Battle will start)
TE Vernon Davis
OTs Adam Synder, Jonas Jennings
OGs Larry Allen, Justin Smiley
C Eric Heitmann

(As an aside, Jennings played really well this while he was healthy. There was a noticeable difference when he was manning LT and when someone had to sub, even when it was Tony Wragge, who played better at guard)

DEs Bryant Young, Marques Douglas
DT Amobi Okoye (I'd rather the Niners pick Reggie Nelson and have two stud safeties, but I think Okoye might be the pick if the brass thinks he's big enough to play DT (6'1, 310, 19! years old)...Okoye can sign a five-year contract and then be a free agent at 24...this is potentially harmful for a team that doesn't think Okoye will reach his potential until later...since the drafting squad could lose Okoye before he blooms)

LBs Derek Smith, Brandon Moore, Cato June, Adalius Thomas (I'd LOVE to see Ulbrich as a fifth LB, subbing with Moore on running downs, and see the Niners snag two top LBs)
FS Keith Lewis
SS Mark Roman/a second-round pick (Eric Weddle, Utah?)
CBs Shawntae Spencer, Walt Harris (assuming Harris can hold on another year, which he likely can)

This scenario has the Niners signing Stallworth, June and Thomas as their three free agent splashes. With 37.5 million to spend, it's definitely possible...

Thursday, February 22, 2007

finally some good news...

In a HUGE stroke of luck for the Niners, Adalius Thomas was not tagged today by the Ravens. He would be the biggest free agent signing of anyone. If the Niners get him, they will "win" free agency's biggest prize. Given his history with Nolan and SF's oodles of cash, this is a distinct possibility.

Pat Kerney, the Falcons' old DE, was also not tagged. He's a possibility too...

But Thomas is the big story.

Bob Babich

ESPN reports Babich will take over as the Bears' defensive coordinator...I hope so...

Losing Turner is a big deal...what offensive system will the Niners use next year? Whatever coach they choose, priority number one should be someone who has proven success handling young quarterbacks. Smith's progression is the most important thing for next year...year three is often a quarterback's first truly solid season. If Smith doesn't get markedly better next year, the team won't make the playoffs. If he does--and he can--the team should be in the postseason.

prediction

I'll talk about Turner later...

In the meantime, the Bears have decided to part ways with Ron Rivera...

Will Singletary be the Bears' next defensive coordinator? It just seems too perfect, doesn't it?

Who will replace Turner as offensive coordinator? Readers, any ideas?

Sunday, February 18, 2007

The calm before the storm...

It's a strange time right now in the Niners' organization...hiring Turner will cause shockwaves throughout the organization. The Niners will be staggered, having thought the Cowboys' tension was finally over...Nolan will need to hire a new offensive coordinator, Singletary could conceivably end up as the Chargers' defensive coordinator, and the entire Niners' coaching staff will undergo huge changes.

Plus, free agency is set to begin on March 2, which is certainly diverting the front office's attention from scouting potential coordinators in case Turner bolts...

Is this the calm before the storm? Or will the Chargers go in a different direction than Singletary/Turner, thus keeping the Niners' staff in order?

Also, keep an eye on how Dwayne Jarrett looks in combine drills...a few mock drafts have the Niners taking Jarrett, but I bet they go defense unless Jarrett is a total knock-out in the combines....the Rashaun Woods/JJ Stokes first round picks are still be fresh in Niner fans' minds...

Of course, it's not like picking defense is a sure thing either...Reggie McGrew, where are you?

Tuesday, February 13, 2007

Uh oh...

Now San Diego has a coaching spot open?! They already interviewed Norv once...and don't think just because Norv said he was happy to be back that he won't be lining up to coach the Chargers...

The only thing the Niners have going for them here is that AJ Smith is a control freak, which might not jive with Turner's urge to pick his own coordinators...Jerry Jones wasn't too happy about it, and it's pretty much what got Marty fired...

If the Chargers nab Norv, it'll be bad news for the Niners...because they might not only lose Norv, but it's not out of the question that Turner would turn around and hire Singletary to be the Chargers' defensive coordinator...

Hold your breath again, folks...one more time...

Monday, February 12, 2007

Arrington?

LaVar would be a nice addition to the team...the Niners missed Peterson's presence as a large LB who could move around the field last year. Adalius Thomas (6'2, 270 lbs!) is another option, assuming he's not franchised...and, of course, Thomas has the Ravens' D/Nolan connection...

On the WR front, the Niners should consider trading a third or fourth rounder for a veteran if one's out there...Jerry Porter could be an option for cheaper than that...

Friday, February 9, 2007

Injuries...or lack thereof...

People love to blame losing season on injuries. But it's rare that people praise lack of injuries for winning seasons.

The Niners won seven games this year because they were markedly more healthy than previous years...often more healthy than their opponents. This is the name of the game in the NFL. So much depends on staying healthy.

I hope Nolan repeats the team conditioning from last year...it made a huge difference. And so did eliminating the most injury prone (Plummer, Lloyd, etc.).

Good news and bad news

The good news is Norv Turner is staying...but the bad news is Dwight Freeney is going to be franchised by the Colts.

The Niners might turn to fellow Colts defensive teammate Cato June. June is a playmaker...sometimes looking like the only Colt on the field (when the run defense decides to hibernate). He'd be a great pickup, especially now that the Niners are going to the 3-4 full-time.

In order for the 3-4 to be effective, the Niners need some help on the defense.

Harris and Spencer are legit starters. They stay. The Niners could use another veteran CB to act as a reliable nickel. Mike Adams isn't good enough yet.

Mark Roman is a good but not great safety. We could improve there. Remember, Roman was cut from the Packers at the beginning of the season...he's playable, but he's not a star. And his age limits his upside. We could definitely use an upgrade here. Having a big-time safety to pair with Lewis would make a HUGE difference. It would make our secondary one of the top 10 in the NFL...one player, immediate improvement. Harris, Lewis, Spencer and Pro Bowl Safety would be Top 5 NFC. I'd even consider taking a safety in the first round if we can get a Pro Bowler...remember, safeties tend to drop in the draft, so great ones can fall to 11.

Keith Lewis...you are a star. Thank god we have you on this team. You came out of nowhere last year...keep it up this season. You can be a Pro Bowl safety with a little more improvement.

At linebacker, Smith and Ulbrich are great third and fourth linebackers. Smith is actually good enough to be a 2 when healthy. Brandon Moore is great against the pass...at times, he was our only rusher this year. This makes him a solid three.

But we need a number one. Here's where we have to cash in on a free agent. June would be great...and we wouldn't have to totally break the bank.

At defensive end, we need another spalsh in free agency. Ignore offense completely if need be...we need a stud LB and a stud DE. Otherwise, we will be sitting out the playoffs again.

On offense, we could use another WR, yes...but I'm comfortable taking a shot on a wideout with a second or third round in the draft...look at the history...there are many WR stars that fall past round 1. It's a position of depth...and even the Niners have a history of finding good ones late (Owens, Tai Streets, Brandon Lloyd...OK, Lloyd sucks, but still...).

Brandon Williams, of course, was a second-round pick...let's just cross our fingers that he develops into a star returner...

We're pretty much set at O-line, but there's more bad news: Jeremy Newburry won't be back. I was REALLY hoping we could use him as a backup this year...but, alas, the Niners don't want to tie up any money in a long, long, longshot. If he is healthy, he'll be a fantastic pickup for someone. The guy is plain nasty. And he's a stud in the clubhouse...a ton of energy.

Davis makes TE a non-issue. Obviously, Gore and Smith are good...Norris seems like a find at FB. Kicker and punter are set.

So, let's open up that wallet, Mr. York...and get us June or Lance Briggs/Adalius Thomas and the best darn rusher out there, now that Freeney is gone...

Monday, February 5, 2007

the march to free agency...

OK, now that the Colts have formally declared themselves as the best team of 2006, we can move forward with stealing their best defensive player (MAYBE second best. Bob Sanders is awesome).

We need to make a huge impact in free agency this year...it's been too long since the days when I used to pick up a newspaper and read that the Niners signed X big-name defensive star (Kevin Greene, Rod Woodson, Deion Sanders, Richard Dent, Ken Norton Jr., Charles Mann, Rickey Jackson, Chris Doleman, Tim McDonald...just to name a few).

This is our time-warp year back to 1994, fellow fans...

Wednesday, January 31, 2007

Uh oh...

It seems as though Norv Turner is so confident he will be hired by Jerry Jones that he's already making strict demands...such as having free reign on who is hired from this point on...

Losing Turner will not be good for this team...we can only hope he taught his players well enough in his one year, assuming he does, in fact, leave.

Man, the Niners have just been killed by other teams mooching off of their coaches. This will be three Offensive coordinators in three years...

If Turner leaves, who steps in? Nolan NEEDS an offensive genius. He's a defensive guy. And with Smith still so young, having a veteran coach for Smith is absolutely necessary. He needs a role model...

Friday, January 26, 2007

Am I being paranoid?

Or is the following scenario possible...

1. The Cowboys snatch Lovey Smith away from the Bears for an ungodly amount of money.

2. The Bears, in turn, hire Mike Singletary away from us, bringing him back to the Windy City.

To avoid this, perhaps we should think about making 'the intense one' our new defensive coordinator. While the ol' Dave Campo/Norv Turner combination brings back memories of the Cowboy teams that I despised, I think I'd have to reluctantly go with Singletary...he's a stud. We need to keep him on board as a coach...perhaps we should give him a chance as a coordinator.

I hear Turner is also a possibility to replace Parcells...this would not be good for our team either. Let's hope no team goes a-poachin'. We've had enough coaching turnover for one off-season. Leave our mediocre 7-9 team alone, NFL!

Super Bowl thoughts...

Well, my pre-playoffs pick of Colts vs. Saints was close...and, to be fair, I wasn't expecting two to three inches of snow when I made my NFC pick. But, having spent the past three weeks in Chicago, I realize now that I should have expected it...the Bears have a huge home field advantage.

They won't have it in Miami.

Dwight Freeney was outstanding against the Patriots. The Niners should pay whatever it takes. The guy is a one-man wrecking crew. Count me in as sold. He was even decent against the run...one game doesn't mean much, obviously, but this guy is a true talent...and he's been a star from the getgo. I hope the Niners aren't still afraid of putting a lot of money in a defensive player, what with the Gabe Wilkins and Reggie McGrew debacles many seasons in the past...

Gotta think the Colts hand it to the Bears in the Super Bowl...no?

Mr. Mora goes to Washington

Not the University of, but Seattle...as a defensive backs (!) coach...

I guess Mora valued family over job status...guess I can't blame him there, but he would have made for a great defensive coordinator with Nolan...if they were willing to work together...

The hunt for a defensive coordinator continues...

Freeney

Keep an eye out for Dwight Freeney tomorrow...watch how quickly he moves off the line. See if he can beat the Pats' O-linemen to get to Brady. The Niners might be tempted to offer him a boatload of money this offseason. He'd likely be their best edge rusher since Charles Haley. Freeney's had a down year this season, which could convince the Colts that he's on the decline (which, perhaps, he is...).

However, check out the man's stats:

2002Indianapolis Colts164140.0113000.0001
2003Indianapolis Colts153127.0411000.0001
2004Indianapolis Colts163431.0316000.0003
2005Indianapolis Colts163429.0511000.0003
2006Indianapolis Colts162926.035.5000.0003

Given that Freeney was born in 1980, it's hard to believe that the 5.5 sacks will be a trend. He has blazing speed but has struggled against the run throughout his career (see: Colts terrible run defense).

Freeney's stats are also a bit misleading, as the Colts typically score a ton of points. As a result, teams that get behind often throw the ball, which give Freeney more sack attempts (and thus more sacks).

But if you've ever seen him play, there's no doubting his speed. If he can rattle Brady, the Niners might be convinced to make a run at him...

Duffman is thrusting in the direction of UT...

While the departure of Billy Davis was expected and probably for the best, Larry Mac Duff's exit to be an assistant coach at the University of Texas is a blow to the team.

While Mac Duff has presided over four miserable years in the history of the franchise, the special teams have not been a problem under his tenure. In fact, during the Niners' successful 20-year run, kicking and coverage were annually poor. The team had enough talent to mask both problems, but they seemed to always exist. Much was blamed on the SF winds in Candlestick.

However, Andy Lee and Joe Nedney have each put up consecutive good years. Maurice Hicks is explosive as a kick returner and Brandon Williams shows promise as a punt returner. Before him, Arnaz Battle and Jimmy Williams both had very good stints as return men. Terry Jackson and Keith Lewis also both made names for themselves playing under Mac Duff.

It is somewhat ironic that the Niners exhausting search for reasonable special teams finally occurred in the down years of the franchise. Mac Duff leaves San Francisco on the doorstep of success once again. He will not be around to see the sweet fruits of his labor, but he should be recognized as an excellent coach and one of the few bright spots of the past four years.

Billy Davis...gonzo!

The Niners fired defensive coordinator Billy Davis today...only two days after former defensive coordinator Jim Mora Jr. was let go by the Falcons.

Assuming that Mora doesn't take the University of Washington job (not currently available to him and, after all, he was just joking...), the ex-Niner coach would make for a superb replacement of Davis. A Nolan/Mora Jr. defense would be intense...if merely for the combined personalities of the two men. Add Mike Singletary's stare, and you've got a Pro Bowl trio. If only the team could get some players to match their coaches...perhaps the 40-million in cap room for this season will begin addressing this.

The SF Chronicle and other media outlets are speculating that it might be Singletary's job to lose, perhaps for fear that the former Bears MLB would take another team's D-Coordinator job if the Niners don't give it to him.

However, Lil' Mora has to make for an enticing candidate if he doesn't hook on as a head coach somewhere else. He was very effective here with Mooch and Erickson...one more go 'round might be a good idea...

MISC.

1) Calvin Johnson is awesome. He should be the No. 1 pick, over Brady Quinn or Brian Brohm. The Niners victory yesterday makes it a near guarantee that they will not pay the price to move up to get him. Oh well. He is exactly who the team needs right now.

2) A few people have talked about signing an experienced wide receiver in free agency, but there just isn't anyone out there who will make a real difference. Drew Bennett is OK and adds something to the team given his size (no other receiver on the squad is nearly as tall). However, the best route for SF might be via trade. Remember, the biggest name wide receivers to switch teams recently (Javon Walker, Terrell Owens, Deion Branch) have all been traded--they were not free agents. So, perhaps the Niners ought to wait to see if a receiver has an internal scuffle with his current team and then pop up with a draft pick offer (a second or third round pick) to secure a top WR. A big-time threat to go along with Battle (great game yesterday for him) and Bryant would make the team explosive...that is a huge missing piece that would make the Niners NFC Championship contenders.

3) Where did the pass rush come from yesterday? That was unseen, all year long...

4) Alex Smith played well with absolutely nothing to lose yesterday. Hell, even a loss would have had positive consequences (better draft pick). We can only hope that Smith remembers the feeling and carries it over to next season.

5) I'm picking a Colts v. Saints Superbowl. Yes, the Colts have no run defense...but I think the pressure is off Manning this year...I just have a feeling...
